As promised, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) today launched the Passat R-Line through a virtual event. The sportier-looking D-segment sedan arrives around nine months after the refreshed standard Passat, adding some key features along the way.

First, let’s talk about pricing. The Passat R-Line is retailed in 204,433 RM on the road without insurance, including full exemption from sales and service tax (SST) valid until December 31. That gives it a premium of around RM 21,600 over the regular Passat 2.0 TSI Elegance.

The price includes a five-year unlimited mileage warranty, a three-year free service package and five years of free roadside assistance. Buyers will also receive a free 300-watt trunk-mounted Helix soundbar for a limited time, while supplies last.

For that, you get the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine as the Elegance, producing 190 PS from 4,180 at 6,000 rpm and 320 Nm of torque between 1,500 and 4,180 rpm. All of this is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG wet dual-clutch transmission with shift paddles. Fuel consumption is calculated at 6.5 liters per 100 km combined in the WLTP cycle.

The R-Line trim level adds the usual variety of faster-looking bits. There’s a much larger bone-shaped front air intake with glossy black C-shaped corners, plus deeper side skirts and a glossy black rear bumper insert with dummy quad tailpipes. It rides on larger 19-inch multi-spoke Verona alloy wheels and continues as standard with front and rear LED lights with sequential indicators.

Inside, the Passat R-Line comes with a thicker flat-bottomed steering wheel, aluminum pedals, a black headlining, and black Nappa leather trim with a carbon fiber-like pattern. In terms of infotainment, the car is equipped with an 11.7-inch digital instrument display, along with the high-end Discover Pro navigation system with a 9.7-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless connectivity by cable.

The rest of the kit list includes keyless entry, power button, triple zone climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, cruise control, eight speakers, and a reversing camera. They are also equipped with 14-way power-adjustable front seats with driver-side massage and memory, adaptive dynamic chassis control (DCC) dampers and an XDS electronic differential lock – features not offered on the Elegance.

Like the Elegance, the R-Line does not come with autonomous emergency braking, but has six airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, stability control, blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, a monitoring system tire pressure and child ISOFIX. seat anchors at the rear.
