KUALA LUMPUR: Three people have been arrested again for their alleged participation in an illegal online gambling game, after a request for their arrest was rejected.

Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid, Kuala Lumpur CID Deputy Chief, said the trio were arrested on Sunday (October 11), after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) released them on MACC bail.

“Our request for pretrial detention was rejected today (October 12). However, we have detained them again in relation to a case of illegal online gambling in Cheras,” he said when contacted on Monday (October 12).

SAC Nik Ros Azhan said that the police will request his remand in custody on Tuesday (October 13) at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters.

Nine people in pre-trial detention by MACC were reportedly released on MACC bail on Sunday.

The MACC had previously summoned nine high-ranking police officers on Friday (October 9) to facilitate its investigation as it expanded its network to catch those involved in online gambling and scam syndicates from Macau.

According to a source with knowledge of the case to date, 39 witnesses had been called to record their statements and 19 of them were referred.

“MACC is aggressively tracking the remaining union members, with a focus on finding involved law enforcement officers,” the source said.

So far, MACC has frozen 736 accounts and confiscated RM101 thousand in connection with this investigation.

Senior police officers are believed to be attached to the Kuala Lumpur and district police headquarters and include two OCPDs and four officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the sources said.

The police also called several senior CID officers to assist in the investigations and give their statements.
