PETALING JAYA: PKR Chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has denied having any financial interest in several publicly traded stocks that have seen extraordinary trading and profits recently.

“I want to emphasize that I have no financial interest in these stocks. I want to take this opportunity to remind all investors to invest carefully and not to invest based on hearsay.

“It is an unfortunate reflection of the state of our economy that such rumors can move the markets,” he said in a statement on Monday (October 12).

Anwar urged Bursa Malaysia and the Malaysian Securities Commission to take action against any individual who manipulates the stock market through “malicious political rumors”.

The last Friday (October 9), The edge reported that Malayan United Industries Bhd (MUI) had seen buying interests after Anwar said he would meet with the King on Tuesday (October 13) for the presidency.

The MUI counter, which saw 228.66 million shares traded, rose 2.5sen or 17.86% to 16.5sen at 11.13am on Friday.

Farizan Ibrahim, Anwar’s sister, was appointed an independent non-executive director at MUI in June 2018.
