Exclusive New iPhone 12 Reveals Impressive Apple Design Decisions

We’re just days away from the launch of Apple’s iPhone 12, and while multiple leaks have revealed both big updates and big concerns, there were still plenty of unknowns. Well, not anymore, because the biggest leak in the iPhone 12 series has been saved for last.

Stealing the thunder from others, Weibo leaker Kang (hailed for near-perfect track record) has multiple details for the first time about the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and the new iPhone 12 mini. And the main news is that the iPhone 12 Pro Max seems set to put all other iPhone 12 models to shame.

Breaking with what we had heard so far, Kang reveals that Apple has decided to give the iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7-inch) a main rear camera with a sensor 47% larger than even the iPhone 12 Pro, a 5x optical zoom and “Extended” ultrawide capabilities.

This compares a 4x optical zoom on the iPhone 12 Pro (6.1-inch) (versus 3x on the iPhone 11 Pro models) and will join the Max for a LiDAR sensor (which was in doubt). That said, this is the first time that Apple has given its larger device an overhead main camera and that is unlikely to go well with fans of smaller phones.

And this is not the only surprise. Kang confirms multiple updates across the iPhone 12 lineup that haven’t been reported before:

  • Enhanced OLED displays called ‘Super Retina XDR Displays’
  • Improved scratch and impact resistant glass called “Ceramic Shield Front Cover”
  • Dolby Vision video recording support
  • A 5G ‘Smart Data’ mode that is automatically set to 4G “based on app bandwidth” to save battery
  • There is no 5G mmWave support for iPhone 12 models outside the US.
  • Apple to reintroduce ‘MagSafe’ brand for range’s filtered wireless magnetic charging system

Going further, Kang also reveals the color options, pricing, and a fractured release schedule for each new model:

While the leaks had revealed that the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro were likely to launch first, the extent of the delays for the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max is surprising, and they will be the last iPhone releases to date. . Since stocks are likely to be limited on arrival, expect a Christmas rush.

But perhaps the biggest takeaway from Kang’s information is that in a year when Apple introduced a fourth iPhone model, it has also effectively created three tiers of iPhone with the iPhone 12 Pro Max clearly elevated above the rest.

The good news is that Apple has avoided rivals’ sizable price hikes (caused by the high cost of 5G modems), but concessions have been made to achieve this: no EarPods or wall charger, and degraded batteries, which are likely to result controversial.

I’d suggest that for anyone with an iPhone X or newer, 2020 is probably not the year to update your iPhone, but that advice is likely to fall on deaf ears, as the jump to 5G is expected to drive a massive jump in sales. sales.
