Covid-19: The 142 schools in Klang, the 242 schools in the red zones of Sabah will close from October 8 to October 23

PETALING JAYA: All schools located in red zones were ordered to close starting Thursday (October 8) and will remain closed until October 23, says the Ministry of Education.

“According to the prime minister’s special message on October 6 on the government’s decision to close schools in red zone areas across the country, all schools in areas confirmed as red zones by the Ministry of Health they will be closed, “he said in a statement on Wednesday (October 7).

He said this would affect 142 schools in Klang, Selangor and 242 schools located in the three red zones in Sabah, adding that this will cover all the ministry’s primary and secondary schools, as well as private schools registered with the ministry.

Sabah’s three red zones are Sandakan, Papar, and Tuaran.

Regarding classes, the ministry added that students and teachers will also resume learning at home during this time.

“During this school closure period, principals and principals will ensure that teachers and students carry out the teaching and learning process at home based on the suitability of the teachers and students,” he added.

As for the schools that are taking the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) mock exams during this period, the ministry said they may be rescheduled for a later date.

He also said boarding schools, including vocational colleges, will be closed and parents or guardians must bring their children home.

“However, students who are waiting to be picked up by their parents or students who wish to remain in the dormitory of the school and the vocational college during this period will be under the care of the guardian of the hostel,” he said, adding that the food and drinks will be provided by the school during this time.

He also said that the ministry is constantly monitoring the Covid-19 situation across the country and is working closely with the National Security Council and the Ministry of Health on this matter.

“Any notification of school closings in other districts will be made from time to time.”
