KUCHING (Oct 8): Sarawak registered eight new positive cases of Covid-19 today, bringing the total number of positive cases in the state to 732, said Senior Deputy Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
He said the latest cases consisted of four locally transmitted cases, of which three cases were recorded in Kuching and one in Bintulu, along with four imported cases where two were recorded in Kuching and two in Miri.
“Case 725 involved close contact with Case 724 that was confirmed positive on October 7.
“This case was evaluated through active detection activities on October 7 and the rT-PCR test result of the case was positive the same day,” he said while providing the latest update on the situation of Covid-19 in the state in a press. conference today.
He said the case, who is asymptomatic, has been admitted to Bintulu Hospital for further treatment.
“This case has been categorized as local transmission after being infected by Case 724 between September 27 and October 7.
“The results of other contacts in Case 724 have been negative, but they will undergo a second screening test on the 10th day,” he said.
For cases 726 and 727, Uggah, who is also chairman of the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), said that these were two men from India who came to Sarawak to work for a private company in Miri.
“Both cases arrived in Malaysia on September 17 via Kuala Lumpur and there they underwent the mandatory 14-day quarantine.
“During quarantine, both cases were tested for Covid-19 twice, where the first test was through the rT-PCR test and the second test through the RTK antigen test. The results of the two tests were negative, “he said.
He said both cases continued their journey to Miri on October 4 and were readmitted to the quarantine center and also underwent Covid-19 screening.
“They were screened for Covid-19 at a private hospital in Miri on October 7 and the results of the RT-PCR test were positive the same day,” he said, adding that these two cases have been classified as’ Import A ‘in view of the fact that the patients were infected while in their home country, namely India.
Contact tracing in these two cases is still ongoing.
Regarding Case 728, he said that it involved a local man who had traveled to Kelana Jaya, Selangor from September 22 to 27 to visit his relatives.
“The case underwent a self-assessment at a government health clinic on October 6, as he was concerned about his health after suffering a fever on September 27.
“The screening test conducted on October 6 came back positive for Covid-19 today (October 8). The patient has been referred and admitted to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for further treatment, ”he said.
He added that this case has been categorized as ‘Import B’ in view of the fact that the patient was infected when he was in Selangor and that the investigation and close contact tracing for the case is ongoing.
For cases 729, 730 and 731, these three patients were close contacts with case 719 that was confirmed positive for Covid-19 on October 6, Uggah said.
He said these three new cases live in the same home as Case 719 and were detected through active case-tracking activities.
“All are asymptomatic and have been admitted to SGH for further treatment,” he added.
He also said that 13 other contacts close to Case 719 tested negative for the first Covid-19 screening test and that other contacts would undergo a second screening test on the 10th day.
In case 732, Uggah said it was a local man who had traveled to Sabah from September 19 to 27 on business.
“Before returning to Sarawak, he underwent an RT-PCR test on September 25 at a private laboratory there. The results came back negative the same day and as such he was allowed to return to Sarawak.
“Upon arrival at Kuching International Airport (KIA), the case received a home quarantine order and was instructed to undergo a Covid-19 assessment on the 10th day, which was October 6.
“This test was carried out at a government health clinic and the results on October 7 found that the case had tested positive for Covid-19,” he said.
He said the case, who is asymptomatic, has been admitted to SGH for further treatment.
“This case has been categorized as ‘Import B’ because it was infected while in a high risk area, namely Sabah,” he said, adding that investigation and close contact tracing of this case is ongoing.
Uggah said that with the eight new positive cases recorded, this resulted in 29 patients now being treated at hospitals across the state, of which 16 are treated in SGH’s isolation ward, eight at Miri Hospital, three in Sibu. Hospital and two at Bintulu Hospital.
“There are also no Covid-19 patients who have recovered or been discharged from hospitals today.
“The total number of recoveries remains at 684, which represents 93.44 percent of total cases,” he said.
Regarding the number of people under investigation (PUI), he said that today 16 new cases were registered and that four cases were pending the results of laboratory tests.
Since the first positive Covid-19 case was reported on March 13, the state has recorded a total of 19 deaths.
