UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has officially launched the Toyota Hilux 2021 facelift in Malaysia.
The revamped pick-up truck comes in five variants: the Single Cab 2.4 MT 4 × 4 in RM 92,880 on the road without insurance, the 2.4E AT 4 × 4 in RM 108,880, the 2.4G MT 4 × 4, in RM111,880, the 2.4V AT 4 × 4 in RM 133,880, and the 2.8 Rogue AT 4 × 4 in RM 146,880. UMWT offers the Rogue for RM 144,880 – or RM2k discount – for early registrations made this year. Note that the above prices include sales tax, as the pickup trucks are excluded from the government’s 2020 sales tax exemption.
As before, 2.4L and 2.8L GD turbodiesel engines are available, but the larger unit is reserved for the Hilux Rogue you see here. The 1G-FTV now generates 204 hp at 3,400 rpm and 500 Nm from 1,600 to 2,800 rpm, which is a significant jump of 27 hp and 50 Nm from before. Despite the higher production, Toyota claims that fuel consumption is 4% lower at an average of 10.9 km / l. The engine gains a heavy duty turbo unit that is now water cooled (air cooled).
The rest of the Hilux range is powered by the 2.4L 2GD-FTV engine with 150 hp at 3,400 rpm and 400 Nm from 1,600 to 2,000 rpm. This Variable Nozzle Turbocharger (VNT) equipped unit has received improvements in cooling and fuel economy. Thanks to increased pressure in the common rail system, fuel efficiency has increased by 5%. Perhaps more significant is the new and longer service interval of 10,000 km or six months (it was 5,000 km or three months), which will reduce maintenance costs and reduce inconvenience.
All variants come with six-speed transmissions: automatic with sequential shifting (Toyota’s usual Power / Eco mode is there) or a manual for the 2.4G single cab and 2.4G crew cab. The steering now has a variable flow control system (except for the single cab) with reduced demand on the power steering pump, helping to save fuel. The Rogue and the top 2.4L (V) variant get an Auto LSD to help with traction. All variants are 4 × 4 high riders.
As for the wheels, the single cab has 17-inch steel rollers, the 2.4E and 2.4G come with 17-inch alloys, while the 2.4V and Rogue sit on 18-inch wheels with terrain rubber. road 265/60 (A / T for the rest). The flagship rims have a unique look.
Kit-wise, all variants have automatic halogen reflector headlights with follow me home, but the 2.4V and Rogue come with automatic bi-LED headlights with LED DRLs and fog lights. All three main variants (G MT, V and Rogue) have power adjustable / retractable rear view mirrors with turn signals.
Inside, the same three taller variants are equipped with Optitron gauges with a 4.2-inch color multi-information display, keyless entry with push-start and leather steering. The trio’s touchscreen head unit supports Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Six speakers are standard on the Double Cab board, as are USB charging ports. The 2.4V and Rogue come with automatic air conditioning and rear vents, and a dash cam as standard (optional for other double cabs).
As for the seats, it’s cloth for the G and E, combination leather for the V, and black-gray perforated combination leather for the Rogue. Rogue and 2.4V drivers get power front seats and footwell lighting, and the flagship adds lighting in the door trims.
Last but not least, security. The single cab, 2.4G and 2.4E have three airbags (double front, driver’s knee), while the top two variants have seven full airbags, including side and curtain. All double cabs are ASEAN NCAP five-star rated and feature VSC, hill start assist control, emergency stop signal, and reversing sensors (2.4G and above have a reversing camera). Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert are functions reserved for the two main variants. Also for the first two there is security and solar tinting.
Opt for the Rogue and you get Toyota Safety Sense consisting of Pre-Collision System (PCS), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), and Lane Departure Warning (LDA) with yaw assist.
Each Hilux comes with a custom security system consisting of an engine immobilizer, alarm, and cabin intrusion sensor. Additionally, a telematics system is standard on the Rogue and 2.4V (optional for the others), and this allows real-time tracking of the truck using GPS signals.
As is customary with UMWT, there is no shortage of options, and minor variant buyers can specify their car with some kit that is offered as the higher standard in the range. Examples include DVD-AVX head unit (RM2,500 for 2.4E), 360 degree panoramic view monitor (RM2,600), blind spot monitor (RM2,000 for 2.4G, 2.4E ), rear video recorder (RM350 for 2.4V, Rogue) and telematics system (RM2k for all except 2.4V, Rogue).
You’d be surprised, but the sports bar is an optional item for all double cabins, including the Rogue, which will cost you RM1,555. There are also lights for the bed and side steps. Click on the price list above to see the full list of options.
In terms of colors, Crew Cab buyers have seven options, and they are Bronze Mica Metallic (the hero color you see here), Phantom Brown Metallic, Crimson Spark Red Metallic, Attitude Black Mica, Super White II, Medium Silver Metallic and Silver Metallic. The single cab has a single solid white color option.
The Hilux factory warranty is five years or 150,000 km. As mentioned, the service interval is now every six months or 10,000 km. Speaking of service, UMWT’s Toyota Service Savers package, which essentially allows you to prepay future service costs, including it in the loan, is available starting at RM3,580. The company claims that with TSS, owners can save up to 13% and enjoy discounts of up to 20% for select items and parts replacement.
If you’re wondering about the parts of the facelift, almost I forgot about that, such was the amount of specs involved. Introduced in June of this year, this is actually the second facelift for this generation. Compared to the outgoing pickup, the current Hilux has a larger grille and the bezel is significantly more pronounced. The eyes are sharper and there is a remodeled bumper. The Rogue exaggerates the butch look with bits of black plastic on the nose and top guards.
The easiest way to spot the latest facelift from behind is from the taillights, which now sport a distinctive ‘E 3’ LED signature. The Rogue also has a trim piece that connects the tailgate latch and third brake light; incorporates the Hilux emblem. Here’s the salient design, in case you forgot.
