CHINA He said on Wednesday that the United States should stop its attacks and unprovoked accusations against China, accusing US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of maliciously creating a political confrontation and smearing Beijing.

Pompeo visited Japan on Tuesday and called for deeper cooperation with Australia, India and Japan to counter China’s growing regional influence.

“Pompeo has repeatedly fabricated lies about China and maliciously created a political confrontation,” the Chinese embassy in Japan said in a statement.

“Once again, we urge the United States to abandon its Cold War mentality and ideological prejudices, stop accusations and unprovoked attacks against China, and deal with relations with China in a constructive manner,” the embassy said.

Pompeo’s visit to East Asia, the first in more than a year, coincides with a worsening of tensions with China.

The United States and China, the world’s two major economies, are at odds on a wide range of issues, from Beijing’s handling of the coronavirus to the imposition of a new security law in Hong Kong to ambitions in the Sea of South China.

Pompeo’s call for the Quad nations of the United States, Japan, India and Australia to form a united front against China’s growing influence is a sensitive issue for his regional allies, who depend on China for trade. – Reuters
