The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recently issued compounds worth RM 700,000 to telcos that have failed to perform identity verification for new prepaid SIM registrations in 2019. Celcom, which was one of MCMC sanctioned telecommunications companies have already taken action against their distributors and are currently conducting further investigations.

Regarding the recent action by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to mobile phone providers who failed to perform identity verification for new prepaid SIM card registrations in 2019, Celcom Axiata Berhad has taken immediate action to suspend responsible distributors and will further investigate their misconduct.
In accordance with MCMC standards and regulations, Celcom practices self-regulation and periodically self-policy more than 10,000 third-party distributors across the country, to increase awareness and general standards of practice.
Celcom takes this matter seriously and strives to adhere to MCMC’s standards, policies and guidelines for prepaid SIM registrations.
As announced yesterday, Celcom received 3 compounds worth RM 150,000. All prepaid SIM records must be verified and each individual can only have 5 SIM cards in their name. The MCMC has emphasized that it will not compromise on the matter and will crack down on those who do not comply with the guidelines.
The purpose of identity verification is to stop misuse and criminal activities. Verification must be done on an automated platform that is secure and encrypted. All Malaysians must present their IC, while foreigners can provide their MyPR card or passport when registering for a new prepaid SIM.
