Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani revealed how Old Trafford hero Diego Forlan helped ease his move to the club.

The 33-year-old signed an initial one-year contract with the club on Monday and United have the option to extend it for an additional 12 months if it impresses.

Cavani signed a free transfer and he was clearly not the club’s first choice, otherwise they would have signed him earlier at the window given his availability.

United clearly needed to convince themselves that Cavani still has what it takes to play at the top, while the club wanted to avoid past mistakes by handing out high salaries to an unmotivated player.

However, Cavani has revealed how Forlán, who spent two seasons at the Theater of Dreams, gave Solskjaer a glowing reference to his suitability for the club.

“Diego, when he had to give references about me, he did, he said very good things,” Cavani told Uruguayan media.

‘It’s okay to dream, but I like to wish for better things. Dreaming seems like a fantasy, but wishing things makes you see them more real. ‘

Cavani hasn’t kicked a ball since March, but United need him to catch up as Anthony Martial will miss the next three games by suspension following his red card against Tottenham.

The Reds face Newcastle United at St James’ Park after the international break and Cavani hopes to make his debut.

Solskjaer is likely to slowly accommodate the 33-year-old in his starting eleven given his lack of fitness for the match, but Cavani is reported to have asked the club if he could make his debut in Sunday’s humiliating 6-1 loss to Spurs. .
