MANCHESTER UNITED has completed a surprise raid for Edinson Cavani.

Free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, the Uruguayan forward had been linked to Atlético de Madrid, Leeds and Benfica.

But the Red Devils won the race to sign Cavani, striking a deal on the day of the transfer deadline with a slight delay due to the terms of the image rights.

An initial one-year contract has the option for the club to add another season.

The 33-year-old is expected to make more than £ 200,000 a week in Manchester and could play his former club in the Champions League clash later this month.

When signing, Cavani told the club’s website: “Manchester United are one of the best clubs in the world, so it is a real honor to be here.

“I have worked very hard during my free time and I am looking forward to competing and representing this incredible club.

“I have played in front of some of the most passionate football fans in my career and I know it will be the same in Manchester.

“I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere of Old Trafford when the fans are sure to return.”

“I hope to continue writing my little story in the football book and I know that is why my approach must remain the same as always: work, work, work.

“I have had a conversation with the manager and this has increased my desire to wear this beautiful shirt.”

Anthony Martial’s red card at the weekend means Cavani’s debut could come in the game against Newcastle on October 17.

But it was the incredible ease with which United conceded last time out, losing 6-1 to Tottenham, that worried the fans the most.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ed Woodward have been determined to improve their attack this autumn with the arrival of £ 39 million Donny van de Beek.

Cavani is the club’s second signing of the day after the capture of Alex Telles.

The 27-year-old Brazilian international full back signed from Porto for £ 13.6 million, which rises to £ 15.4 million based on his achievements.

With 341 league goals in 556 games for clubs such as Napoli and PSG, Solskjaer believes he has acquired a first-class forward very much in the mold of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who excelled at United in the mid-1930s.

However, fitness issues restricted Cavani to just 35 games in the past two years and he started just seven games last season.

United manager Solskjaer said: “Edinson is a great seasoned professional who always gives his all for his team.

“His record for goals with the club and the national team is fantastic and we are delighted to sign a player of his caliber.

“He will bring energy, power, leadership and a great mentality to the squad but, most importantly, he will bring goals.

“He has had a brilliant career so far, winning trophies in almost every club he has played for, and he still has a lot more to give at the highest level.

“The opportunity for our young players to learn from one of Europe’s top scorers in the last 10 years is fantastic and will really benefit them in the future.

“Edinson knows exactly what it takes to succeed and we all look forward to seeing him make an impact at Manchester United.”
