PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says no lockdown will be implemented in Malaysia for now, despite the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases.
Instead, he said Putrajaya will only implement Enhanced Motion Control (TEMCO) orders in areas with a high number of cases.
“If we implement (an OLS) again, it can have huge effects that we are concerned that could lead to a collapse of our social and economic systems,” he said today in a national address.
“In this way, economic and social activities in other areas will not be affected and can continue with strict SOPs and strong law enforcement.
“I believe that preparing our health system will allow us to manage the spread of Covid-19 without requiring us to close economic sectors as was done before.”
Muhyiddin said Putrajaya would take into account the interests of the 15 million working class Malaysians, adding that this was to maintain their livelihood and the economic stability of the nation.
He also addressed parents’ concern for their children at school, saying the Ministry of Health would monitor the situation in schools and work with the Ministry of Education to ensure that preventive measures are taken.
“If necessary, any decision to close schools across the country will be made at the special meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) based on the advice of the Ministry of Health.”
He also said that the NSC would decide on any move to ban interstate travel again, giving its assurance that the public would receive adequate notice to ensure that no one was left stranded by such a move.
Muhyiddin said Putrajaya was also studying a proposal to tighten restrictions on events and gatherings that involve large crowds, such as conferences and wedding dinners.
He said the Health Ministry would give its opinion on the matter first, including proposals for additional standard operating procedures if necessary.
“What is needed right now is that we all comply with the SOPs and instructions issued by the government.
“Leaders of law enforcement agencies will be mobilized to public places to ensure compliance. If there is any violation of the law, a punishment will be imposed without distinguishing between rank or position.
“Remember, we have managed to flatten the Covid-19 infection curve before this. I think for sure we can flatten it again, ”he said.
