After showing the car two weeks ago, Audi has unveiled the refreshed A5 Sportback in Malaysia. The revamped five-door fastback replaces its late-arriving predecessor, which was introduced last year. It also brings with it a new entry-level variant.

Prices have risen despite the arrival of the base model, the 2.0 TFSI, which is sold at retail RM 350,900 on the road without insurance. That’s RM11,000 more than the previous car cost, and that was with the quattro all-wheel drive. The quattro version is now priced at RM 377,900. Included is a 50% reduction in sales and service taxes (SST) plus a five-year unlimited mileage warranty.

As we have previously reported, the engine is the familiar EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol four-cylinder. In the base model, it generates 190 hp from 4,200 to 6,000 rpm and 320 Nm of torque between 1,450 and 4,200 rpm. It goes from zero to 100 km / h in 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 241 km / h.

In the quattro model, those figures rise to 249 hp from 5,000 to 6,500 rpm and 370 Nm between 1,600 and 4,500 rpm, which is very slightly lower in power compared to the previous model. The sprint time from zero to 100 km / h is reduced to 6.0 seconds and the car reaches a maximum of 250 km / h.

Both models feature a seven-speed wet dual-clutch S tronic transmission, as well as a 12-volt mild hybrid system. The latter allows the car to slide with the engine off and operate the start-stop system when decelerating from 22 km / h.

The refreshed A5 carries the latest Ingolstadt design language and features a number of subtle changes to the attractive styling. Up front is a flatter Singleframe grille and redesigned bumper with a full-width air intake design, along with matrix LED headlights with dark internals, sequential indicators, and segmented daytime running lights.

The slim side profile sees little change, and the tapered side skirts are the only noticeable adjustments. The rear sports new taillights with a segmented design similar to the front DRLs, as well as a redesigned rear bumper with a black diffuser-like insert and integrated trapezoidal tailpipes.

As standard, the 2.0 TFSI has 18-inch five split-spoke alloy wheels, while the quattro model receives 19-inch two-tone multi-spoke alloy wheels. The quattro also comes with advanced specs, meaning it comes with a full-width chrome frame for the front air intakes, as well as a chrome strip on the rear bumper.

Inside, Audi has been very careful not to mess with a sleek, well-built cabin. The steering wheel is redesigned with an airbag overhang that mimics the shape of the grille, while a larger 10.1-inch center screen takes pride in the dash. The latter is now a touchscreen, so the old rotary dial has been scrapped in favor of a small storage compartment behind the cup holders.

Taking advantage of the new screen is the latest version of Multi Media Interface (MMI), with a more minimalist design, multi-touch gestures similar to those of a smartphone and a new voice control system that recognizes natural language. Both variants come with MMI navigation plus, which is also featured on the 12.3-inch virtual cockpit instrument display.

Standard equipment includes keyless entry, power button, triple-zone climate control, power-adjustable sports seats with driver’s side memory, leatherette and real leather upholstery, ten speakers, 180-watt sound system, gear camera back and hands. – Free electric tailgate. Sports suspension comes standard across the board, with passive dampers, this time without adaptive dampers.

In terms of safety, the A5 Sportback is equipped with lane-keep assist, but it does not come with autonomous emergency braking, somewhat obviously. This is unacceptable in this price range, especially now that even BMW offers the system in the 330i.
