KUALA LUMPUR: Alor Setar Prison in Kedah was placed under an Enhanced Movement Control (MCO) order for 14 days following an increase in Covid-19 infections there.
“During the entire period, it is forbidden to enter and leave the prison.
“Also, relatives of the inmates cannot visit them for now,” said Chief Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The enhanced targeted MCO would allow for contact tracing, he said.
Yesterday, the Health Ministry said that 113 new cases of Covid-19 were detected in Kedah, of which 112 infections came from the Tembok group.
The group emerged on September 30 when a 46-year-old Malaysian worker contracted the Covid-19 virus and subsequently died from the disease.
As of yesterday, the group had 429 cases related mostly to detainees.
Ismail Sabri said the targeted enhanced MCO would be in effect for 14 days starting at 12:01 am Tuesday.
In a statement yesterday, it also said that police issued compounds to 345 people for violating the MCO recovery while another 60 were arrested and 28 released on police bail on Saturday.
Among the crimes committed are not wearing masks and not practicing physical distancing, he added.
He said the police-led enforcement operation task force conducted 39,362 checks across the country on Saturday.
“Among the places inspected were supermarkets, restaurants and banks,” he said.
In Ops Benteng, Ismail Sabri said 76 illegal immigrants and a smuggler were arrested on Saturday.
“A total of 101 barricades were made throughout the country,” he said.
“The authorities will also strengthen security at all border controls and secret passages.”
In another matter, Ismail Sabri said that 10,216 public sanitation operations had been carried out since March 30.
The sanitation was carried out in places like housing estates and shopping centers.
