KOTA KINABALU: Tributes from leaders on both sides of the political divide have come after the passing of former de facto law minister Liew Vui Keong today.
The permanent president of Warisan died at 11:50 a.m. M., At age 60. He had reportedly been suffering from a lung infection after initially seeking treatment for a herniated disc at Gleneagles Hospital here before the state elections.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, expressing his condolences to the family of MP Batu Sapi, described Liew as a dedicated and responsible person.
“On behalf of the government, I wish to place on record the utmost gratitude and appreciation for your contributions as an MP and when you served as a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department prior to this,” he said on Facebook.
Warisan Vice President Darell Leiking praised the work of his former federal cabinet colleague and said the thoughts and prayers of party leaders and members were with the family.
The president of the PKR and leader of the opposition, Anwar Ibrahim, said that the people and the nation will remember the contributions and sacrifices of Liew when he was justice minister of Pakatan Harapan.
Warisan General Secretary Loretto Padua Jr said the party is saddened by Liew’s death.
Party Chairman Mohd Shafie Apdal extends his deepest condolences to Datin Lindai Lee and her four children.
“The party has lost a highly respected leader who contributed to the country and state through his hard work and dedication.
“The family asks that their privacy be respected as they cry during this very difficult time,” he said, adding that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
Sabah PH Director Christina Liew described Liew as “a good man who served people well until he passed away.”
Sabah DAP acting chief Frankie Poon said Warisan had lost a prominent leader in the death of Liew, whom he described as “a very nice person.”
“I am saddened to learn of Liew’s passing. It’s so sudden. It is a great loss for Warisan. I pray that her family remains strong during this difficult time, ”said Poon of Sandakan.
Sabah Barisan Nasional chief Bung Moktar Radin described Liew’s passing as a loss to the state.
“Although we were from different parties, I have always respected all the leaders, including Liew. We may have faced each other in Dewan Rakyat, but we could still be friendly outside, ”he told the FMT.
PBS President Maximus Ongkili said Liew was a dedicated leader, especially on Sabah’s rights issues. He described Liew as a good friend and an excellent leader.
MCA President Wee Ka Siong said that while he was still in opposition, he and Liew had differences of opinion, particularly on the abolition of the death penalty.
“However, our friendship never stopped because of that. We both worked hard at whatever we did that could benefit the people and the country, ”he said.
Abdul Rahman Dahlan, a member of the Supreme Council of Umno, said he had lost a friend while the nation had lost a leader. He said that Liew’s sacrifices and contributions to Sabah and Malaysia will not be forgotten.
Sabah PPBM deputy chief Masidi Manjun told the FMT that Liew had been a good friend for many years.
“Despite our political differences, we remain good friends. I would like to express my deepest condolences to his family, ”he said.
Former Prime Minister Musa Aman wrote on Twitter: “My condolences to the family of Datuk VK Liew on his sudden passing in Kota Kinabalu. May he rest in peace. “
PAS Law Minister and Secretary General Takiyuddin Hassan said Liew was a good friend whom he had met before he became a minister.
“He was a good minister and a professional lawyer. We will continue with some of his legal reform plans. We were also very committed to Parliament and Liew had shown his support for some bills that we had proposed.
“I am saddened to hear of his passing, especially when we were told that his condition had recently stabilized.
“On my behalf and on behalf of PAS, our condolences to his family and children.”
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin tweeted: “My condolences to the family of Datuk VK Liew.
“VK was kind and friendly to me. He was professional and courteous in Parliament, and a strong fighter for his home state of Sabah. Rest well, VK. “
Chief Economy Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali said on Twitter that he was “completely shocked” upon learning of the death of his fellow MP.
“My condolences to his wife, family and loved ones. May your soul rest in eternal peace, ”he said.
Advisor to Lawyers for Freedom, N Surendran, said Liew was helpful in finding solutions for Malaysians on death row in Singapore. He said that the late deputy spoke simply, was practical and determined.
“He pushed for the abolition of the death penalty, even though he met strong opposition from some of his colleagues in the PH cabinet,” he said.
