Why Selangor faces a higher risk

PETALING JAYA: With the Covid-19 virus spreading rapidly in Selangor, health experts are warning that a number of risk factors can make the virus more easily transmitted in the state.

The President of the Malaysian Public Health Physicians Association, Datuk Dr. Zainal Ariffin Omar, said that as the Klang Valley was more densely populated than most areas in Malaysia, it may be at a higher risk of spreading the coronavirus easily. .

“There are currently many cases of Covid-19 in the state, and there are many public events and opportunities for different groups of people to interact with each other.

“There is also a high movement of people in their day-to-day activities, such as in their businesses, offices, public parks and social events,” he said.

Dr. Zainal advised people to strictly follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) at all times and to avoid public venues and events.

“It is also best to seek early treatment and get tested for Covid-19 if they suspect they have the virus or show symptoms.

“There must also be continuous monitoring of compliance with the SOP by the community and the authorities,” he said.

For example, he said, people should strictly follow the rules of home quarantine or mandatory quarantine.

Universiti Malaya epidemiologist Dr. Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud said a concern about the increase in cases in Selangor was that the state had a large migrant population due to its economic output.

“If the virus takes hold in that population, it will be difficult to eradicate as they are more difficult to track and isolate,” he said.

He also said that lax adherence to PCOS can increase if people think the disease is not a threat until a spike occurs.

“To address this, health education must be innovative and continuous, but not enough attention is paid to it. PCOS fatigue is something to avoid, ”he said.

He suggested involving behavioral scientists, as they understand what makes behavior change successful and why some people get fatigued.

“The messages must be packaged correctly, not be criticized to the people and they must be directed to different groups. Key opinion leaders must participate.

“People need to feel like they are part of this war against the pandemic,” he said.

The Chairman of the Malaysian Coalition Physicians Association, Dr. M. Raj Kumar, noted that complacency was the main reason why people in Selangor were at risk of being exposed to the virus.

“The movement of people and the population density of the state may be reasons, but they are not as serious as lowering our guard.

“People basically take things for granted and don’t take the warnings seriously,” he said.

He cautioned that people should avoid 3Cs, which are crowded places, confined spaces, and close conversations.

“They must also obey the 3W: wash hands, wear a mask and heed the warning of the Ministry of Health,” he said.
