SDMC to announce stricter regulations for travelers entering Sarawak to protect the state from the surrounding Covid-19 ‘ring of fire’

KUCHING (September 30): The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) will announce stricter regulations on admission procedures for travelers to the state tomorrow (October 1).

Senior Deputy Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also chairman of SDMC, said this measure was necessary to protect Sarawak from more imported Covid-19 cases.

Speaking in today’s daily Covid-19 update, he said that the Sarawak situation was as if it was “surrounded by a ring of fire,” referring to the high number of Covid-19 cases in neighboring countries and states.

He said one of those countries was the Philippines, which recorded 2,015 new cases and 309,3030 total cases of Covid-19 as of Sept. 29.

He also said that other countries and states surrounding Sarawak with high cases of Covid-19 as of September 29 include Indonesia (4,002 new cases; 282,724 total cases), Singapore (23 new cases; 57,742 total cases), Sabah (73 cases). new; 1,843 in total cases) and Brunei (0 new case; 146 new cases).

“SDMC held an emergency meeting today after taking note of the daily increase in Covid-19 cases outside of Sarawak.

“Therefore, SDMC has devised a strategy to protect the state from continuously receiving imported cases from outside Sarawak. These stricter steps regarding admissions procedures to Sarawak will be announced tomorrow (October 1), ”he said.
