We previously talked about the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite on the Proton X50 Flagship, which sounds promising given the number of active safety systems and their functionality. Of course talking is cheap, so during yesterday’s second media preview event, Proton gave us a live demo of some of these systems for us to experience for ourselves.
In this video, you can see the X50 Flagship’s Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) systems in action, with Hafriz Shah on hand to guide you through how they work.
First, FCW serves to warn drivers of potential collisions later, and it will do so in three stages. In the first stage, a visual warning is displayed on the instrument cluster when the system detects that the car is a potentially dangerous distance from the vehicle ahead.
If the driver ignores this and continues to close the gap, the pre-collision warning kicks in and provides audible and visual alerts, including a reminder for the driver to begin applying the brakes. The final level is the sharp warning brake, and that’s when the system actively applies the brakes abruptly to prevent or mitigate a collision, while returning your attention.
Ignore all three stages and AEB will take over, automatically braking the car to a stop. It uses the sensors on board the car and operates at speeds between 4-150 km / h in situations involving moving vehicles (cars and motorcycles), and up to 80 km / h with parked vehicles. It can also detect pedestrians, although it only works at speeds of up to 70 km / h.
The X50’s AEB system also includes Emergency Brake Assist, which continues to monitor the situation even when the brakes have been applied, and activates if it detects insufficient braking force being applied. This is different from AEB on some other cars, which disables the system when you are braking, as it believes you are in full control.
Of course, while the systems are impressive, they are by no means a reason for you to relax behind the wheel. These systems are there for your back-up and you shouldn’t always depend on them, so stay tuned and be ready to use those brakes.
