KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Pime Tan Sri Muhyddin Yassin (pix) said that identity politics or racial politics in multiracial Malaysia should not continue even if it cannot be completely erased.

Muhyiddin said that since social media is now a part of our lives, society is easily activated when issues related to race, religion and income arise, in the process affecting interracial relationships.

“Everyone has their own feelings, but it still shouldn’t have detrimental effects. For example, when it comes to the distribution of wealth in the country, the Malays who form a large part of the society feel that their well-being has been sufficiently taken care of.

“They feel like they need more help even though the New Economic Policy already existed, but when we look at it now, a lot of leaks and bad things happened, causing dissatisfaction to still exist,” he said.

Muhyiddin said this at the ‘Balai Rakyat Makmur Bersama’ dialogue session here today, which was also attended by Chief Minister (Education) Dr. Mohd Radzi Md Jidin and Minister of Communications and Multimedia Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.

Muhyiddin said that at the same time, other races in countries such as China and India also felt similar problems and feelings.

“There are also among them who are poor and low-income. The same feeling also exists between them.

“The question now is what are the policies and the ways that the Perikatan Nasional government can do to address the shortcomings and weaknesses mentioned above, (so that) it is not seen as a race driven or favoring a particular race while neglecting the rest, “he said.

Therefore, he said, the government’s shared prosperity policy is seen as one of the solutions to address the problem in the next 10 years, including questions about how to bridge the racial economic gap.

Furthermore, the prime minister said that the policy will not marginalize issues related to women and family development.

She said the Ministry for Women and Family Development, and its agencies, are always on the ground to receive feedback to ensure that target groups are not neglected. – Called
