Debak grocery store fire takes four lives

Firefighters covering the body of the deceased at the scene of the fire this morning.

KUCHING (September 27): Four victims, including two girls, were killed in a fire at a grocery store in Kampung Melayu Dit, Debak, around 2.30 am this morning.

The two girls, aged 16, were identified as Dayang Ina Eset and Dayang Ina Arrohan, while the other two deceased were identified as Sirin Yusuf, 60, and Rosni Sari, 23.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), in a statement, said it received a call about the incident at 2:47 am that saw firefighters deployed from the Betong fire station to the scene.

“After the fire was completely extinguished, we found the charred bodies of the four victims inside the burned tent,” Betong Bomba chief Vincent Baling Yabi said in the statement.

He also said that the lumber store was totally destroyed and Bomba is still investigating the cause of the fire.

After the bodies of the deceased were handed over to the police, Bomba concluded its operations at 5.50 am.
