KOTA KINABALU: DAP Secretary General Lim Guan Eng said today that the party will not work with Umno as long as it remains under the leadership of current President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his predecessor, former Prime Minister Najib Razak.

While acknowledging that this was an issue that had recently arisen, he maintained that this was the party’s position.

“I want to affirm here that DAP will not work with Umno under the leadership of Zahid and also under the leadership of Najib. If we are fighting against Umno or Perikatan Nasional in Sabah, how can we work with an Umno under Zahid or Najib? This is important, ”he said today at a campaign rally for the Sabah state elections.

His comment comes in the wake of an assertion by PKR Chairman Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday that he had the support of a strong and formidable majority of MPs, mostly Malaysian-Muslim elected representatives, to form a new government.

Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said at the time that he had been informed that many Umno MPs supported Anwar, the leader of the opposition.

Following Anwar’s announcement, Lim had said that party MPs would back Anwar as prime minister as long as he had the numbers necessary to form the government.

However, several leaders of Umno and BN were quick to dispel talks about defections to Anwar’s side.

Yesterday, Warisan Vice President Darell Leiking said in a speech that the party will never join forces with Umno.

Without the backing of DAP, Anwar would lose the support of 42 MPs. The president of the PKR had said that Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s faction of parliamentarians was not among the MPs who supported him.
