Better to resign if current government members withdraw their support, Hisham says

PETALING JAYA: If any member of the government is determined to withdraw their support for the current government, it is better to resign, says Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein (Photo).

Furthermore, opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should be ashamed of his attempts to take over from the federal government as the country faces the Covid-19 pandemic, Hishammuddin said.

The chancellor claimed that Anwar did not take note of people’s concern and only wanted to fulfill his personal agenda to be the next prime minister.

“Personally, Umno should not be entertained by Anwar’s propaganda. I think the main purpose of his press conference was to distract attention to the upcoming Sabah election day,” the former Umno vice president said in a statement Thursday (24 of September).

Anwar had held a press conference on Wednesday (September 23), stating that he had the majority support of the deputies to form the next federal government.

Hishammuddin said that talking about Anwar having the majority to form the government was not something new or shocking.

“Such propaganda has been made by Anwar repeatedly. He has said it before in April 2008, September 2008 and February 2020.

“If you really enjoy the support of two-thirds of the Dewan Rakyat, please reveal to the public how many lawmakers support him, including those of Umno who have betrayed him,” he said.

Hishammuddin said that the party should instead focus its efforts on winning the Sabah state elections.

“My principle is clear and firm, I agreed to join the cabinet based on the principle and support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to lead the country,” he said.

“In any form of uncertainty, all cabinet ministers and government legislators must give their full support to the prime minister.

“Let’s not hold a high-level position in government, let’s enjoy all the benefits, but at the same time, let’s not support leadership.

“Let this be a reminder to all the ministers, vice ministers and heads of companies linked to the government that have been appointed.

“We have to concentrate our efforts on rebuilding the country and not get involved in a political ploy that will bring no benefit,” Hishammuddin said.
