Luis Suárez left Barcelona’s training ground in tears after saying goodbye to his teammates before his transfer to Atlético de Madrid.

The 33-year-old is about to join Diego Simeone’s team in a € 4 million (£ 3.6 million) deal after a deal was reached between the two clubs on Tuesday night.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu had initially blocked Suárez’s move to Atlético because he didn’t want the striker to join a La Liga rival.

But Suarez was furious with the decision and Barcelona backed down after the Uruguayan threatened to hold a press conference with his lawyers if the Atlético move was not cleared.

The Barcelona hierarchy has wanted to unload several senior players this summer and Suárez becomes the latest high-profile outing after Arturo Vidal and Ivan Rakitic.

Suárez was a popular member of the Barcelona dressing room and the forward has become close friends with Lionel Messi.

On Wednesday, Suárez left Barcelona’s training camp for the last time after saying a moving farewell to his teammates.

And as he was walking away, the reporters who were there saw him with tears in their eyes.

Suárez leaves Barcelona as his third top scorer of all time and during his six years at Camp Nou he has helped the club win four La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey and the Champions League in 2015.

Suarez came close to joining Juventus this month, but the Serie A champions pulled out of a deal because the forward was unable to obtain an Italian passport.

Suarez traveled to Perugia last week to take an Italian B1 test, which is a requirement in the process to obtain an Italian passport.

But the forward has been accused of cheating on the exam with the Italian authorities claiming that he had previously agreed parts of the test.
