PETALING JAYA: The 2020 Trucking (Amendment) Bill has passed in Dewan Negara, says Datuk Seri Dr. Wee Ka Siong.

The Transport Minister said that with the passage of the bill on Tuesday (September 22), Malaysia is one step closer to being able to better address reckless driving and driving under the influence.

To remind him of the importance of the amendments, he cited a recent case in which a drunk driver killed a Form Five student.

“Another case that happened early this morning, we are indeed outraged! That is why the Ministry of Transport has made amendments to the Road Transport Law of 1987 and today, the Dewan Negara has approved the amendments after the third reading “he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (September 22).

Dr. Wee added that the bill was passed in Dewan Rakyat on August 26.

“This is something that satisfies me and those who work in the Ministry of Transport.

“We are getting closer to realizing our collective desire to strengthen the Highway Transportation Act of 1987, specifically in the areas of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and reckless driving,” he said.

Under the amendments to the bill, those accused of causing death by dangerous or reckless driving can face up to 10 years in jail and be fined up to RM 50,000 if found guilty.

The bill proposed that those charged under Section 41 for dangerous or reckless driving resulting in death could face between five and 10 years in prison, as well as a fine of not less than 20,000 and 50,000 ringgit.

In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, a person can face a prison term of between 10 and 15 years, and a fine of no more than RM 100,000, if the bill is passed.

Their license will also be disqualified for five years if convicted.

Before this, article 41 of the law states that those guilty of the crime face between two and 10 years in prison and a fine of between 5,000 and 20,000 ringgit.
