KUALA LUMPUR: Police questioned a man for animal abuse after the camera caught him throwing a cat to the ground with force.

Wangsa Maju OCPD Supt Rajab Ahad Ismail said that a 55-second video of the incident had gone viral on social media and WhatsApp.

“The initial investigation revealed that the incident occurred in a parking lot in front of a row of commercial premises in Jalan Rejang, Setapak. The video showed a man picking up a cat that had climbed onto the windshield of his car and throwing it to the ground.” it said in a statement on Tuesday (September 22).

He said the incident caused a stir on social media with many criticizing the man’s actions, which could have caused injury to the cat.

“A 36-year-old man turned himself in at the Setapak Police Station around 11:30 am on Tuesday morning.

“The suspect has no prior criminal record and now the investigating officer will record his statement,” he said, adding that the motive for the man’s actions has not yet been determined.

Supt Rajab said the case was classified as cruelty to animals under Section 29 (1) (a) of the Animal Welfare Act.

He said that if convicted, the man faces a fine of RM50,000, a year in jail, or both.
