COVID-19 | Malaysia has registered 57 new Covid-19 cases today, of which 51 cases were transmitted locally and six were imported.

Sabah again accounted for the majority of local cases with 49 new cases detected there. This included the newly discovered Quarters cluster in Tongod, Sandakan, the sixth cluster reported in Sabah this month.

The Director General of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, said that the Quarters group was first detected when a health worker in Tongod was referred to a hospital for testing with a rapid test kit of Covid-19 antigen (RTK-Ag) on September 4.

The test was positive, but the confirmatory test using the more sensitive reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test was subsequently negative. Meanwhile, tests were being carried out in the local community of Tongod.

“Screening in Tongod district began on September 6 with the participation of the local community, including workers from a health clinic there. To date, five cases of Covid-19 have been identified.

“All the positive cases (Cases 10253 to 10257) are citizens. They show no symptoms and have been admitted to Duchess of Kent Hospital, Sandakan, for treatment, ”he said today in a statement.

Noor Hisham added that 117 people have been examined in the Quarters Cluster to date, of which 112 are still awaiting results.

“The source of the infection is still under investigation,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Tongod Health Clinic will be closed until decontamination and sanitation work is completed, and patients with clinic appointments have been referred to nearby health clinics.
