KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The High Court here on Monday (September 22) allowed a request from Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (Photo) for his trial, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday (September 21 and 22), to be postponed as the former deputy prime minister had to undergo a Covid-19 screening.
Lawyer Hamidi Mohd Noh representing Zahid informed the court that his client underwent an examination at KPJ Tawakal Hospital here on Monday afternoon.
“The results of the first exam were negative, but the results of the second exam will only be known in 24 hours, which is tomorrow afternoon.
“As such, we are requesting that the trial this afternoon and tomorrow be postponed and continue on Monday (September 28),” he said during the proceedings before Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah.
Deputy Prosecutor Datuk Raja Rozela Raja Toran said that the prosecution had no objection to the request.
“However, the defense must immediately inform the court once the results of the second evaluation are available,” he said.
Judge Sequerah granted the postponement of the trial and set September 28 for it to resume.
According to the official social media accounts of the president of Umno, he had been in Sabah since last week for the Sabah state election campaign and had arrived here on Sunday (September 20).
Earlier in the proceedings Monday morning, Zahid’s former executive secretary, Mayor Mazlina Mazlan @ Ramly, told the court that she had overpaid Zahid’s credit card bills with Yayasan Akalbudi checks.
Mazlina, 42, said that since she took over as executive secretary of Datuk Rosiah Osman in 2011, all of Yayasan Akalbudi’s check stubs and Bagan Datuk MP’s personal checks were in her charge.
“The check stubs were kept in a locked drawer in my office, but when the change of government took place in May 2018, I cannot remember and did not record or note who had the check stubs” , said. when he was questioned by Zahid’s lawyer, Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Zainal, on the 41st day of the trial.
Zaidi: Why did you use three checks to pay a credit card bill?
Mazlina: The bank has no complaints about this.
The 90th prosecution witness agreed with the attorney that each checkbook contained 100 checks.
Zaidi: Did you keep, record or take note of the payments made with the checks (personal checks of Yayasan Akalbudi and Zahid)?
Mazlina: No, I didn’t.
Zahid faces 47 charges, 12 of them for criminal breach of trust, eight for corruption and 27 for money laundering involving tens of millions of ringgit in funds belonging to Yayasan Akalbudi.- Bernama
