KOTA KINABALU: Early voting for the 16th Sabah state election involving 16,877 security forces personnel and their spouses will take place tomorrow at 55 voting centers, the Electoral Commission (EC) said today.

The EC Secretary, Ikmalrudin Ishak, said of this number, 7,487 are armed forces personnel and their spouses, and 9,390 are from the police.

“For this, the early voting centers will be open from 8 am to 5 pm,” he said in a statement.

He said guidelines to curb the spread of Covid-19 will be enforced during early voting, including physical distancing, use of face masks, use of hand sanitizer, taking body temperature and taking attendance.

The candidate’s agents and election observers appointed by EC will oversee the early voting process, which will be streamed live on EC’s Facebook page, he added.

“All ballot boxes for early voting will be kept in police cells. Ballots will only be counted on September 26 starting at 4 pm.

“The counting of votes will take place in the counting centers designated by the EC and the process of counting the votes will be witnessed by agents of the candidates,” he said.

The state election follows the dissolution of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly on July 30.
