LUKE SHAW has asked the Manchester United management to buy more players following their 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace.

A jaded-looking United has only added Donny van de Beek, who came in to score on his debut on Saturday.

And left-back Shaw believes they are falling further behind their rivals by not getting stronger.

Shaw said: “We are a very good group, but personally I think we need more players to strengthen the squad.

“It can give us a boost. When you look around how other teams are strengthening their teams, then we must also do it to keep up with each other. “

Shaw also revealed that there was a no-limits post-match investigation after Manchester United fell in a loss in the opening game.

United were sad and they knew it and Shaw says they have to use the midweek EFL Cup game in Luton to do just that.

Shaw, 25, added: “A lot was said after the game and we have to put it into practice.

“Possibly everything went wrong.

“We need to be very disappointed because we should be, but forget it and move on.

“We have a great game on Tuesday, we have to win it and regain momentum again. At the beginning of the season, how the season unfolds is always key. “

Shaw pointed to United’s lack of preseason preparation for a reason they were so “slow.”

Only 34 days had passed since he lost in the Europa League semi-finals against Sevilla.

Shaw said: “Personally, from my point of view, the preseason we’ve had together is not the right way it should have been.

“On my first day of back training I could probably have counted the number of people who were training on one hand.

“We have only been back together for a week. Look at the teams that have been together for a while, training, playing.

“I think Palace has played quite a few more games than us and it showed. We lacked that aptitude and confidence.

We paid the price, sometimes we were slow and we weren’t on it.

“We have not been able to prepare as we wanted and that is no excuse because we have the quality of players to be able to win games like this, but we were not up to the task and they have punished us.

“It’s the beginning of a new season, we should have been fresh. We knew how Palace was going to play, sit on the block and try to stick with it, possibly all his goals came from that.

“We paid the price and sometimes we were slow and we didn’t.”

Shaw declined to blame the VAR controversy that gave Crystal Palace its second goal.

A hard hand was awarded to Victor Lindelof. David De Gea saved from Jordan Ayew, but was penalized for going off his line and Wilfried Zaha shot home the restart.

Shaw continued: “Nobody knew there was an incident going on, I don’t think I saw a person in the field really complaining.

“Obviously shocked and surprised but nothing surprises me with the VAR.

“Sometimes you’re lucky, maybe we did it last season and got the benefit of that, but we looked the other way around and we can’t blame it because we were so careless and not good enough.”
