Men claim plane crash sightings off Penang waters, search and rescue find nothing

GEORGE TOWN: Two men filed a police report, claiming they saw a plane crash in Pulau Keramat in front of Tanjung Bungah here on Sunday (September 20).

They claimed that the plane that crashed was a private plane.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said a search and rescue (SAR) operation was carried out, but officials found nothing.

The SAR was joined by the police, Bomba, the Malaysian Maritime Control Agency (MMEA) and the maritime police.

Meanwhile, Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Department operations officer Muhamad Salleh Zainun said they received a call about the alleged incident at 2.28pm.

“We started an investigation with the police at the scene of the incident, but we found incomplete information and no other witnesses.

“The distance between the island and the coast is approximately 4km and when the MMEA and the maritime police arrived at the place, they found nothing.

“The MMEA informed us that they were in contact with Butterworth Air Force Base and that there were no reports of any plane accidents today.

“The operation was canceled by Bomba and ended at 4.20 pm.

“We were informed that the MMEA and the maritime police ended their operations at 7.40 pm.

“Operations will remain closed until we receive new information,” added Muhamad Salleh.
