KUALA LUMPUR: A company executive has sued for a charge of inciting his boss to fire an employee for providing information to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Wafiy Abd Aziz, 35, deputy director of an education company, pleaded not guilty.

He was charged in the Court of Sessions here under Section 10 (3) (b) of the Whistleblower Protection Act of 2010, which carries a fine of not more than RM100,000 or a jail term of up to 15 years or both , if convicted.

This is the first time a person has been charged under the law since it took effect a decade ago.

Wafiy is accused of inciting the president of the company to terminate the employment of a 63-year-old employee after providing information to MACC.

The prosecution was carried out by Deputy Prosecutor Mohd Afif Ali while Wafiy was represented by Siti Sarah Khalid.

The judge granted bail of RM15,000 and prohibited Wafiy from speaking to other witnesses during the trial.

The trial is scheduled for October 20.

Yesterday, MACC said it would not hesitate to investigate anyone who tries to act against whistleblowers.
