20 new cases of Covid-19 reported

PETALING JAYA: Twenty new cases of Covid-19 were reported today, bringing the total number of active cases in the nation to 722.

In addition, a new group has been detected in Sabah, called the Bakau group.

Meanwhile, one more death was reported today, bringing the death toll to 130.

Tan Sri Health Director General Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said 17 of today’s cases were local broadcasts, while the remaining three were imported.

“Of the local transmission cases, 14 were Malaysians and three were foreign.

“Nine of the cases were from Kedah, eight from the Sungai group, and one detection during a check-up of a patient with severe acute respiratory disease (Sari).

“There were eight local broadcasts in Sabah, with three cases detected after they were referred to Semporna Hospital from Tawau Hospital,” he said in a statement today.

Noor Hisham said there were three group-related cases in Sabah, one from each group from Tawau, Fort Lahad Datu and Bakau.

The remaining cases in Sabah were detected during controls, which consisted of a patient from Sari, a patient before surgery, and a person from the Tawau community.

The latest report brings the total number of infections detected in the country to 10,164.

Meanwhile, 51 cases had recovered and were discharged today. This brings the total number of patients who have recovered to 9,316, representing 91.6% of all cases.

Noor Hisham added that 12 cases were currently in intensive care units, and two of them required ventilation.

Noor Hisham said that today’s death was of an 82-year-old Malaysian who had a history of having been a stroke patient.

On the subject of the new Bakau group, Noor Hisham said the index case was a Philippine citizen who was first reported on September 16. Yesterday it was again reported as the 129th Covid-19 related death in Malaysia.

“Through close contact tracing, the Ministry of Health has detected two more positive cases related to the group, consisting of a citizen from Malaysia and another from the Philippines.

“At 12 pm today, 109 people have been tested, three tested positive (as previously reported) and 106 are still awaiting their results,” he said. -Named
