KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah candidate for the Api-Api seat, Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai, filed a police report on Saturday (September 19) after his campaign material was “tweaked” with items intended to incite religious feelings.

Dr. Yee, who is the Vice President of PBS, made the report at the Karamunsing Police Station and plans to make a formal complaint to the Electoral Commission (EC) on the matter.

The digitally altered poster circulating on social media shows Yee, a Christian, wearing a Muslim hat with the words “Saya Menang, Hudud Dilaksana!” (If I win, hudud will be implemented!).

“Its nature is quite sinister, because it can be interpreted as seditious and we don’t want to be seen playing with religion and race in the campaign.

“PBS is a multiracial party and our team does not have any element of religious or racial extremism, so we must make that very clear.

“We also don’t want Muslims to misunderstand us. Why am I a Christian and I portray myself like this?

“That is why I find it disappointing that we have discovered campaign material of this nature, I do not think we should lower ourselves so much,” he said after making the police report.

Dr. Yee reminded that all parties must follow the laws of the country and not abuse religion to further their interests.

“My agent will present the same complaint to EC,” he added, hoping that the police can investigate and take action against the culprits.
