BANGKOK, Sept. 19 (Xinhua): Thai prosecutors announced on Friday night (Sept. 18) their decision to charge Red Bull’s scion Vorayuth Yoovidhya with the charges of cocaine use and reckless driving, which caused the death. of a junior police officer in the accident and -Execute case in 2012.
The decision to indict Vorayuth came two months after public outrage prompted Thai authorities, including the prime minister, to relaunch a series of investigations into how and why a wealthy family was allowed amnesty without having to confront to Thai law.
“We want to assure the Thai public that the judicial system is fair and without flaws,” said Itthiphon Kaewthip, deputy director general of the Criminal Litigation Department at the Office of the Attorney General (OAG).
Itthiphon said new investigations found that Vorayuth had taken cocaine, before taking the wheels of his Ferrari and crashing into the junior police officer, resulting in the latter’s death.
Thai netizens on various social media platforms on Friday evening praised the Attorney General’s decision to indict Vorayuth, with comments suggesting “trust in the Thai judicial system.”
Two months ago, a deputy attorney general and an acting police chief decided to drop the charges against the Red Bull scion, citing that the compensations towards the family of the deceased junior officer had been honored.
There have also been reports that forensic and investigative officers were instructed to “hush up” the facts related to the hit-and-run case.
Itthiphon said the next step would be to seek the extradition of Vorayuth, as well as coordinate with Interpol to arrest him.
Vorayuth had left Thailand since the incident. – Xinhua
