PETALING JAYA: A new Covid-19 cluster, dubbed the Selamat cluster, was detected in Sabah after a local was found to have contracted the virus in Semporna, says Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah.
The director general of Health said this brought the total number of new Covid-19 cases in the country to 21 on Thursday (September 17).
“The new group involved a 32-year-old woman who tested positive on September 14 after a screening test at Tawau Hospital when she was admitted for preterm labor.
“Following close contact evaluation and active case detection, another positive case was detected involving a medical officer who treated the index case,” it said in a statement.
He added that so far, 118 individuals have been tested in the group, with 116 awaiting test results.
On the situation in Sabah, he said that a total of five new cases were detected in the state.
Dr Noor Hisham said a local and a foreigner were found to have contracted the virus linked to the Benteng group, which has recorded a total of 142 cases so far.
He said the assessment also detected Covis-19 infections involving a local departure from Sipitang port while another local is returning from China.
Out of a total of 21 cases, Dr. Noor Hsham said that 15 involved locals, while six were foreign and five cases were imported.
He added that this brings the total accumulated cases to 10,052 with 674 active cases in the country.
He also said that no new deaths were reported, thus keeping the death toll at 128 cases, or 1.27% of the total number of cases.
Dr Noor Hisham said there were 13 Covid-19 patients treated in intensive care units (ICU) with two ventilators.
He added that 15 patients had fully recovered, bringing the total recoveries to 9,250, or 92.02% so far.
