SINGAPORE (September 15): Caroline Russell, the third generation to lead Malaysia’s largest tea producer by production, BOH Plantations Sdn Bhd, has been included in Forbes’ 2020 Asia Energy Entrepreneurs list.
The list highlights 25 outstanding women leaders in the Asia-Pacific region.
The family business has four plantations spread over 1,200 hectares that annually produce around 4.5 million kilograms of tea, about 70% of Malaysia’s tea production.
Taking the helm as CEO in 2003, Russell has expanded BOH’s range of teas and international sales and was named CEO after her father retired last year.
BOH Plantations was founded by his grandfather in 1929.
“As the world grapples with the uncertainties brought about by the pandemic, it is more important than ever for Forbes Asia to highlight these women entrepreneurs who rise to the occasion and excel during these difficult times,” Rana Wehbe Watson, 2020 Asia’s editor Power Businesswomen listing, said in a statement issued here today.
Watson said this year’s list recognized 25 women heads of businesses and institutions in a wide range of industries including biotechnology, education, logistics and law.
“His track record of success and resilient leadership sets inspiring examples for others to follow,” he said.
Among those on the list is HCL Technologies’ Roshni Nadar Malhotra, the first woman to chair a publicly traded tech company in India and one of the few female chairmen in the global male-dominated tech industry.

The youngest to make this year’s list is Lucy Yueting Liu, 29, of Hong Kong Airwallex, a 2017 Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia alumnus.
Three other women entrepreneurs from India are also on the list, namely Ameera Shah from Metropolis Healthcare, Divya Gokulnath from Byju and Vinati Saraf Mutreja from Vinati Organics.
Thailand also has three on the list, namely B.Grimm Power’s Preeyanart Soontornwata, Muang Thai Insurance’s Nualphan Lamsam and WHA Group’s Jareeporn Jarukornsakul.
Others include Melanie Perkins from Canva from Australia, Carolyn Creswell from Carman’s Fine Foods from Australia, Maki Akaida from Uniqlo Japan, Aya Komaki from Sanrio Entertainment from Japan, Zhao Yan from Bloomage BioTechnology from China, Annabelle Long from Bertelsmann Asia Investments from China, Lily Kong from Singapore Management University and Rachel Eng from Singapore Eng and Co.
Jang In-a from Smilegate Entertainment from South Korea and Yang Yoon-sun from Medipost from South Korea are also on the list, followed by Nabilah Alsagoff from Nusa Satu Inti Artha from Indonesia, Dewi Muliaty from Prodia Widyahusada from Indonesia, Nguyen Bach Diep from FPT Retail from Vietnam, Truong Thi Le Khanh from Vinh Hoan from Vietnam, Samantha Du from Zai Lab from Shanghai and Olivia Limpe-Aw from Limtuaco Distillery from the Philippines.
