PETALING JAYA: Malaysians have two weeks to participate in the Department of Statistics’s online population and housing census to avoid face-to-face meetings with census takers.
Chief Minister (Security Group) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that although the electronic census had been available since July 7, only 1.5 million Malaysians had participated.
“This figure is well below the target, as Malaysia’s population is about 32.7 million,” he told a press conference on Tuesday (September 15).
Census takers will begin knocking on doors from October 7 to October 24.
“To avoid meeting face-to-face with them (the pollsters), people have until September 30 to fill out (their data) online (www.mycensus.gov.my),” he said.
In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, he urged the public to participate through the electronic census before the September 30 deadline.
“I call on members of the public to opt for the electronic census to reduce face-to-face interactions,” he said.
Ismail also warned the public not to serve food and drinks to census takers in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Malaysians are known for their hospitality. We are used to serving food and drink to visitors.
But please refrain from asking the census takers.
“The government has imposed strict SOPs (standard operating procedure) for census operations in private homes and institutional residences,” he said.
Face-to-face interviews are prohibited indoors.
Previously, Ismail said the police-led enforcement task force had conducted 56,038 checks, including 3,607 supermarkets, 4,798 restaurants, 1,271 street vendors, 1,308 markets, 3,384 places of worship and 2,361 recreation areas.
It said 132 people were arrested for violating the motion control recovery order (MCO).
Of those detained, 14 were detained, while another 118 were issued compound warnings. The crimes they committed included breach of social distancing (49) and breach of client registration (12).
Action was also taken against two people for failing to pay mandatory quarantine bills.
Twelve people were arrested for attending a private party, and another 27 were arrested for not wearing face masks. Private parties and discos were still banned, Ismail said.
Actions were also taken against 30 people who challenged the lockdown order.
