FRANK LAMPARD has responded to Jurgen Klopp after the Liverpool manager’s scathing comments about Chelsea’s summer spending.
The Blues have invested around £ 200 million in Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Malang Sarr and are interested in a deal for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Klopp, who has signed just one player, said the Reds have succeeded “being the club that we are”, adding: “We can’t change that overnight and say ‘now we want to behave like Chelsea.” We live in a world at the moment with a lot of uncertainty. For some clubs it seems less important how uncertain the future is. Owned by countries, owned by oligarchs, that’s the truth. “
Ahead of tonight’s first Premier League game in Brighton, Chelsea manager Lampard responded by saying: ‘With Liverpool it’s a fantastic story of a club for four and a half years, five years since Klopp was there, where they managed to make the recruitment fair for a high level and the reality is, probably apart from Leicester which is an amazing story, most of the clubs that have won the Premier League today recruit at a fairly high level in terms of money .
‘You can go through the Liverpool players – [Virgil] van Dijk, Alisson, [Roberto] Firmino, [Naby] Keita, [Sadio] Mane, [Mohamed] Salah – Amazing players who have been priced very high and Liverpool have for a period of time.
‘What we have done is get out of a (transfer) ban and try to address the situation and try to improve. It is normal (to spend a lot) and we all know it. It doesn’t make sense to do too many accounts with him: we know that Liverpool have spent at a high level, they have an incredible coach and they have incredible players.
“The smart thing Liverpool have done is to believe in their coach and believe in their system for several years, so it’s a great story.
“But it’s a story that has spent money on players and this summer we’ve spent money on players, and now the hard work has begun.”
