SANDAKAN: Warisan’s Sekong candidate Alias Sani has denied allegations that he is a terrorist.
A social media post, which has gone viral in the state, claims that Alias is a former militant who has settled in Sandakan.
Speaking at an event here today, Alias said that while he was detained between 2003 and 2007, it was only a “preventive” measure and that he was never tried or convicted.
“My arrest was only a preventive (measure), I have never supported any terrorist activity.”
The social media post also claimed that Alias was a member of Jemaah Islamiah who was detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA).
Alias explained that in the 1990s, he had sought the religious knowledge of certain people who were considered a threat to security, although the lessons had no links to any crime.
He added that he is a peace-loving Muslim.
Alias said that while he was detained at the Kamunting Detention Center, his religious knowledge improved.
On his decision to enter politics, Alias said he wanted to offer leadership to voters and that his participation in the elections was not against the law.
He said that many famous leaders had also been detained under the ISA prior to this.
