PETALING JAYA: The absence of the best Asian teams will be painfully felt in this year’s Thomas-Uber Cup finals.
Yesterday, Indonesia and South Korea made the dreaded news when they announced their withdrawal from the main badminton team events scheduled for October 3-11 in Aarhus, Denmark, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Both countries have joined the growing list of recalls that already includes Taiwan, Thailand and Australia.
Indonesia’s absence will leave the biggest impact as it is one of the giants of the game.
The men’s team has won the Thomas Cup 13 times, while the women have taken home the Uber Cup three times.
His decision came a day after his government reimposed a large-scale motion control order after a surge in new Covid-19 cases.
The Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) made the announcement after the teams’ last day’s simulation competition in Jakarta.
Meanwhile, according to an official from the Korean Badminton Association (KBA), they have also decided to skip two subsequent tournaments: the Danisa Denmark Open on October 13-18 and the Denmark Open 2 on October 20-25.
Heavyweights from China and Japan are also likely to retire, leaving the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in a tough spot.
They can redraw or shorten the Finals. The worst case scenario is that they will eliminate both tournaments.
