MELAKA: A seven-day-old girl lost her right hand after being bitten by a pet dog at a home in Bachang here on Tuesday.

The head of the Melaka Criminal Investigation Department, Mohd Nor Yhazid Idris, said that before the 9 a.m. incident, his 39-year-old aunt had placed the baby in a crib near the front grill of the house so that he would receive some sunlight as the baby had developed jaundice.

He said that when the aunt returned to tend to the baby, she saw that one of the family’s dogs had bitten the baby’s right hand through the grate.

Yhazid said the baby was rushed to Mahkota Hospital for treatment, but the family was asked to take her to Melaka Hospital.

“The baby was subsequently referred to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for specialized treatment,” he said.

According to Yhazid, initial investigations found that the Plott Hound had been released into the compound of the house.

The case is being investigated under article 31 (1) a) of the Children’s Law 2001/289 of the Penal Code.
