Malaysiakini has won two awards for this year’s Petronas Journalism Awards from the Malaysian Press Institute for its reporting in 2019.
The news portal was named the winner of the newly created “Best Multimedia Journalism” category, which included a RM 10,000 award, a trophy and a certificate.
This was for Malaysiakini’s interactive features on industrial contamination at Sungai Kim Kim, the 50th anniversary the riots of May 13, 1969 and the Budget 2020 ad.
“The jury panel unanimously agreed that, in terms of multimedia presentation, it clearly follows current developments in digital journalism,” the master of ceremonies announced today at an awards ceremony at the Majestic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
All three reporting projects were part of the news portal’s Kini News Lab initiative established in 2018.
In total, the three projects had involved the work of at least 16 reporters, photographers, videographers, web developers, and other staff.
“Malaysiakini has gone to great lengths to train our journalists so that we can tell our stories in more compelling and innovative ways.
“It’s great to see that we are on the right track and I look forward to seeing better multimedia storytelling involving text, photos, graphics, video and audio clips in the years to come,” he said Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan.
In the meantime, Malaysiakini he also won a consolation award in the ‘Award for Excellence in Investigative Reporting’ for his ‘Trapped and Traded’ series on labor abuse and exploitation of Bangladeshi migrant workers.
the four part series and photographic essay were the result of cross-border collaboration between Malaysiakini and Bangladeshi media Kaler kantho.

The consolation prize came with a prize of RM1,000 and a certificate.
The category winner was The star for his reports on drug trafficking in Malaysia.
In total, there were 17 categories in this year’s MPI-Petronas Journalism Award.
The ceremony was originally scheduled to take place in April but was postponed due to the motion control order to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Previously, the MPI was reported to have received 522 submissions for this year’s awards, with 306 entries from 32 media companies.
