PUTRAJAYA: The Tawau Prison in Sabah continues to become a hotbed for Covid-19 infections after the Ministry of Health confirmed 167 more cases from there.
Health Director General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said that of the 167 cases, only six people were not detained, but civilians from the ministry’s selection of close contacts.
The rest are detained, with 70 Malaysians, 61 from the Philippines while 30 are Indonesians.
Tawau Prison, which is part of the Benteng LD (Lahad Datu) group, is currently under an Enhanced Movement Control Order (MCO), where mass screening of detainees as well as prison staff is carried out.
Dr. Noor Hisham said that the ministry had also examined 2,067 people in Tawau and 770 people in Lahad Datu.
“250 cases have been detected in Tawau, while 625 people tested negative. Another 1,192 are still awaiting their results.
“In Lahad Datu 87 cases were detected, 291 tested negative, while the results of 392 are still pending.
“The situation in all clusters are areas under the improved MCO which will be updated from time to time. So far, the implementation has gone smoothly, while the public’s cooperation has been excellent, ”said Dr. Noor Hisham in a statement on Friday (September 11).
Benteng’s LD group, currently the largest and most active group, has recorded a total of 337 cases.
In addition to the Benteng LD group, the other cases were from the Sungai (11 cases) and Telaga (three cases) groups in Kedah.
Sungai’s group currently has 50 cases in total, while the Telaga group has 16 positive cases.
Both groups originated from health workers from two public and private hospitals in the state.
Meanwhile, only one case of the 182 was imported from abroad. The only import case involves a foreigner arriving in the country from the Philippines.
