KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah footballer Matusin Bowie is among five Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) candidates who will compete in the Sabah state elections on September 26.

It will occupy the new Tulid state headquarters in the Pensiangan parliamentary constituency.

Matusin was one of the players who made history under the Sabah team when they claimed the FA Cup in 1995.

He played alongside other big names on the state team at the time, including Matlan Marjan, Khairul Azman Mohammad, Ong Kim Swee, and Yap Wai Loon.

However, he was suspended by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) for being involved in a match-fixing scandal.

Other players who suffered the same fate were Matlan, Junaidy Tuah, Gerard Mojiliu, G Raveychandran and Charles Tindi.

PBRS President Joseph Kurup said the BN leadership gave the party the confidence to compete in Matunggong, Tandek, Kadamaian, Sook and Tulid.

He called it an opportunity for PBRS to show that it was one of the local festivals accepted by all strata of the community.

He advised all members to work hard to ensure that the party’s candidates win, saying: “We must accept the decision of the leadership, which has made the best evaluation in all respects.”

The party was confident that its candidates would continue to protect Sabahans’ rights and interests, it added in a statement.
