Ice cream vendor accused of killing three cats in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: A 35-year-old ice cream vendor has pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty that resulted in the deaths of three cats in Court of Sessions here.

Saiful Azhar Md Rahani nodded to indicate that he understood the charge before pleading not guilty.

He is accused of committing the crime at a house in Teluk Bayu, Sungai Batu, in Teluk Kumbar here at 4:45 pm on February 26, 2019.

He was charged under Section 29 (1) (e) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015, punishable under Section 29 (1) of the same Act, which provides a fine of between 20,000 and 100,000 ringgit or one jail sentance. up to three years, or both, after conviction.

Veterinary Services Department (VSD) prosecutor Roziman Awang Tahrin asked the court to set a date for Saiful Azhar to hire a lawyer.

Session judge Mazdi Abdul Hamid set October 12 to mention the case.

This is the second animal cruelty case brought by the VSD to a Penang court this week.

On Monday (September 7), a 40-year-old administrative employee was fined RM30,000 for the unreasonable treatment of two dogs that belonged to her, causing them unnecessary pain and suffering, resulting in the death of a dog.

Judge Mazdi set October 12 for Saiful Azhar to bring up the case.
