PETALING JAYA: Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin says he was informed by Kudat MP Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri that Veveonah Mosibin did not undergo any examination the day he uploaded a video to YouTube.
Zahidi had previously been criticized for claiming that the teenage Sabahan had pretended to be taking a university exam in the treetop to popularize her YouTube channel.
“Abdul Rahim, who is also the deputy finance minister, told me that there were no exams that day and that he had received the information from a teacher,” Zahidi said in a video clip of a press conference outside Dewan Negara on Monday (Sept. 7) that was posted on social media.
At press time, The Star is still trying to reach Abdul Rahim to confirm Zahidi’s claims.
Several politicians and public interest groups had criticized Zahidi for insinuating that Veveonah had lied.
In June, Veveonah, a student at a public higher education institution, posted a video showing how she had to climb a tree to gain access to the Internet to take an online exam. The video had gone viral on social media.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah had claimed that Zahidi’s statements against undergraduate student Veveonah were in error and that he would rectify them.
Saifuddin had said that the Jendela Digital Negara (Jendela) Plan would be implemented to improve internet coverage across the country, especially in rural areas, including Sabah.
