A patient with acute SARS infection has been transferred to Penang General Hospital.

PETALING JAYA: A new Covid-19 case was reported today in George Town, removing the northeast district of Penang Island from the green zone two days after the state was declared infection-free.

Lam Wah Ee Hospital confirmed that eight staff members have had direct contact with the newly detected Covid-19 case, Bernama reported.

He said the 89-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency room on Saturday with acute gastroenteritis.

“The A&E staff discovered that the patient had a severe acute respiratory infection and immediately isolated him in the A&E negative pressure decontamination room and was immediately transferred to Penang Hospital,” he said. There were no other patients there at the time.

The hospital said the eight staff members have been closely supervised. Immediate terminal disinfection of all affected areas was carried out following the infection control guidelines of the Ministry of Health.

“Clinical services at Lam Wah Ee Hospital are unaffected and patients can continue with their existing care plans at the hospital,” he said.
