KOTA KINABALU: Veveonah Mosibin, the “treetop girl” who rose to fame after a video of her preparing and taking a test at a tree shelter went viral on YouTube, appears to have gone off the grid .
This comes after many negative comments made online against her after Vice Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin, wrongly said in Parliament that she did not take any exams at the time.
The 18-year-old college student, from an inland Sabah town with poor road access and internet connectivity, said she was disappointed and hurt by recent events.
He had also said that he couldn’t handle negativity.
Veveonah could not be reached by phone and the last time he uploaded a YouTube video to his channel was about a week ago.
His last Instagram update was two days ago on Friday (September 4), where he posted his exam schedule and said, “Fake news is dangerous, I get a lot of negative comments. All clear, but we must be fair. (sic)”
Veveonah said she was saddened and disappointed by what happened as it involved not only her, but her hard-working lotmates, many of whom were also facing poor internet connectivity issues when taking their exams. .
He said there was no way to stop what was being said on social media, but reminded users that negative comments can do a lot of harm.
On September 3, Zahidi was responding to a follow-up question from Senator Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin, who asked what was being done to ensure adequate Internet access in rural areas.
The deputy minister cited Veveonah’s case as an example and claimed that Veveonah was a YouTuber who simply wanted to gain fame and was not taking any exams when she uploaded her video in June.
Zahidi apologized to Veveonah in a Facebook post on Thursday (September 3) and said he had received inaccurate information.
“I wish to apologize to Veveonah Mosibin and will make a correction in Dewan Negara on Monday (September 7),” he posted.
Veveonah’s exams were held June 9-12 and his pre-recorded video was uploaded on June 13.
