The water supply to the Klang Valley was cut off since Thursday. Supplies have now resumed for a third of the residents.

ALOR SETAR: A Kedah-based consumer group said today that it would help Klang Valley residents start a civil lawsuit against a factory that is suspected of causing disruptions in the water supply to Klang Valley residents since Thursday. .

Kedah Consumers Association Secretary Mohamad Yusrizal Yusoff said the lawsuit would be in solidarity with consumers in the Klang Valley who suffer as a result of the violation of environmental laws.

It is alleged that the factory allowed the discharge of solvents into a river in Rawang, a tributary of the Sungai Selangor, where raw water is extracted for use by people in the Klang Valley.

The pollution caused the closure of four water treatment plants and the interruption of the water supply to the Klang Valley since Thursday. Supplies have resumed in about a third of the residents affected today.

Yusrizal told FMT: “We will represent Selangor consumers to sue the factory that allegedly caused the river pollution. Since then we have consulted our lawyers and they have agreed to take action against the factory.

“While we know that we are a Kedah NGO, we feel compelled to support the people of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur in claiming their rights as consumers. One of the eight rights of a consumer is the right to have basic needs and the right to have a healthy and safe environment ”.

He said the association has taken legal cases outside of Kedah before. She helped a group of NGOs and companies that are suing a person who is said to be the creator of the Sivagangga group of Covid-19 infections.
