PETALING JAYA: The investigation work on the contamination of Sg Gong will be completed in a week so that those responsible are prosecuted as soon as possible, says the National Commission for Water Services (SPAN).
Its chairman, Wan Hassan Mohd Ramli, said that SPAN was in the process of completing the investigation into the Sg Gong contamination that led to millions of people without water taps since last Thursday (September 3).
He said SPAN was considering using the most severe punishment available under the Water Utilities Industry Act of 2006 (Law 655) for the guilty.
“SPAN will crack down on polluters in Sg Gong, causing a water disruption that affected nearly five million consumers in parts of the Klang Valley.
“We are considering using Section 121 of Law 655, which establishes a maximum fine of RM500,000, or 10 years in prison, or whipping, or even all three.
“Under Law 655, SPAN has the right to investigate and prosecute any party that commits a crime against the supply of treated water and sewage services, including contamination of raw water.
“The group’s management and SPAN’s licensing, legal and compliance committee will assist the Ministry of Environment and Water to take immediate action and ensure violators receive appropriate punishment.
“SPAN is now preparing the investigative documents and will hand them over to prosecutors for their consideration and further action within a week,” Wan Hassan said.
He also said that SPAN is committed to ensuring that all those who pollute the water supply and water sources face legal action.
